Abstract

This article presents a systemic survey of scientiic approaches to the study of rhetorical questions
in language and speech, particularly in poetry. The author’s grounding her own communicative and
pragmatic approach to the study of the rhetorical questions in American poetic discourse and revealing
their functions promote adequate interpretation of the text and the identiication of the communicative
and pragmatic properties of the rhetorical questions, which ensure the perlocutive efect, i.e. the realization
of the author’s intention of inluencing the reader.
