The article offers an overview of the way modern linguistics may use empirical research methods – a fairly new methodology in the Humanities, which is rooted in Social Sciences and is currently widely used in Language and Literary Studies. The tool, on a number of reasons, demonstrates obvious advantages as compared to traditional hermeneutic approach. In our paper, we claim that research in the field of linguistics will benefit from observing and verifying real readers’ responses to literary texts by empirical testing of the hypotheses. The results, often counter-intuitive, will open up new spheres of knowledge, which otherwise remain unexplored.
